Opstal Estate

Opstal Estate’s rich history dates back to 1847 when JC Rossouw acquired the farm De Opstal bij de Fonteine. Just over a century later in 1950, 4th generation Carl Everson decided to continue making his own wine instead of joining the local co-operative winery like many other producers. Today, Opstal has a wide range of quality estate wines under three different labels: The fun, easy drinking and pocket-friendly Sixpence Range; the classical and food-friendly Estate Range; and the premium Heritage Range with our multiple 5-star Platter award-winning Carl Everson Chenin Blanc the cream of the crop.

When we say family we mean it in every sense of the word. Our production manager, Gerhard Theron, is the second generation Theron to join Opstal. His father, Kobus, worked at Opstal for 31 years. We are also proud to have 3rd generation farm workers that have helped to make Opstal a success. Thirty families who permanently live and work at Opstal. We created the Sixpence range  as a tribute to not only Sixpence, but all the legends that have worked on Opstal.

Opstal has an array of quality estate wines under three different labels with Chenin blanc being our main focus. The three ranges are the fun, easy drinking and lifestyle Sixpence Range, the classic and food friendly Estate Range and the premium Heritage Range.

The Slanghoek valley is situated north / south with the Slanghoek mountains to the west and Badsberg east of the valley. Clay soil – where Cabernet Sauvignon is planted – is found on the eastern slopes of the valley.

7 Generations

We are a 7th generation family-run Estate, well known for our hospitality and friendliness. Through this we would like to extend a warm invitation to all our wine & food loving friends to come and visit us on the Estate.

Opstal Estate is situated at the foot of the Slanghoek mountains in the heart of the breathtakingly beautiful Slanghoek Valley on the Breedekloof Wine Route. The valley forms part of the Breede River Valley with Worcester as the closest, large town.
