Lammershoek Red Mysteries 2017

Lammershoek Red Mysteries 2017

Winemaking

An expressive Swartland-style, four cultivar red blend of grapes from characterful old vines, classy and complex with a juicy palate – like its area of origin, somewhat mysterious and reminiscent of classic Old World Rhône wine. Farmed dry-land. The grapes were handpicked early morning. Hand-sorted and only the best grapes were used, before a mixture of whole bunch and partially destemmed pressing. Partial carbonic maceration was allowed on some of the batches. The various components spent 14 months aging in 500 L French oak barrels, 5 000 L foudres* and concrete tanks. One year’s bottle-aging took place before release. A complex Swartland terroir-driven wine – originating from old Syrah, Grenache, Mourvédre and Carignan vines.

Tasting Notes

Vibrant ruby Red. Fresh berries with mulberry and currants being prominent. A lot of ripe sugar plum, cherry, boiled candy and spicy rocket leaf, all gloriously complicated by hints of savory black olive. Well integrated spice flavours. It somehow manages to appear both serious, and simultaneously delightfully juicy. Palate is delightfully light and fresh, but with fruit layers for days; juicy red cherry, over sweet plum, over gentle white pepper, over hints of saline.
