South African Wine Cellar

Boutique · Curated in Singapore

August & September edition

Two Nations, Double the Toast

Welcome to The Cellar. Singapore turned 61 on the 9th of August, the same day as South Africa’s National Women’s Day. That day may already be behind us, but South Africa keeps celebrating Women throughout August, and so are we, with a spotlight on the female winemakers behind some of our finest boutique estates.

Women’s Month

Trailblazers in the cellar

This Women’s Month, we’re pouring the spotlight onto three women who reshaped what South African wine looks like.

Ntsiki Biyela Aslina Wines

In 2004, Ntsiki became South Africa’s first black female winemaker. Remarkably, she was awarded a scholarship to study viticulture having never tasted wine before, and completed her degree in Afrikaans without prior knowledge of the language. Today, she crafts world renowned wines under her own label, Aslina, named after the grandmother who raised her.

Penny Streeter OBE Benguela Cove

An entrepreneur long before she was a wine estate owner, Penny’s path here wasn’t a straight line. A UK property crash once wiped out her first business and left her, a single mother of three, living in a homeless shelter for two years. She rebuilt from there into one of Britain’s wealthiest self-made women, and in 2013 turned a chance boat launch site on the Bot River Lagoon into Benguela Cove Estate, now one of Walker Bay’s most awarded cool climate wineries.

Carmen Stevens Carmen Stevens Wines

Carmen’s application to study winemaking was turned down by the apartheid-era Elsenburg Agricultural College in both 1990 and 1991, and rejected a third time in 1992 on the grounds that she hadn’t completed military service. She reapplied and was finally admitted in 1993, and in 1995 became the first black South African to qualify as a winemaker. She went on to found her own label in 2011, which became the country’s first 100% black owned and woman owned winery.
