Bosman Nero d’Avola 2023

Bosman Nero d’Avola 2023

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-picked, hand-sorted, destemmed and lightly crushed. Two days of cold maceration occurred prior to alcoholic fermentation. After the onset of fermentation, regular pump-overs extracted maximum colour. The wine spent 3 weeks on the skins before being pressed. Barrel maturation lasted for 18 months in a combination of 20% new French oak as well as 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. After blending selected barrels, the wine was allowed to mature for a few months to ensure a balanced, well-rounded result.

Tasting Notes

Bosman Nero d’Avola 2023 is South Africa’s first locally produced Nero d’Avola, made from a Sicilian grape variety adapted to Wellington’s hot, dry climate. This is an impressive interpretation of Sicily’s Nero d’Avola grape, transplanted 20 years ago by Petrus Bosman. Deep garnet in colour. This medium-bodied wine features flavors of dark berries, plums, and black cherries with spicy notes of clove, tobacco, and licorice. A luscious concentration of black fruit, a silky texture, bright acidity, a good tannin structure and a long, satisfying, lingering finish. The wine is aged in subtle oak which supports but does not overpower the fruit, making it elegant and food-friendly.

Special Notes

The Bosman Family have a history of choosing a different path, of challenging themselves to find a solution in the unexpected. So at the turn of the century, when climate change was becoming a reality and it was evident that the Cape Winelands would soon become a much hotter and dryer place, Petrus Bosman, 20 years ago, struck out in search of an alternative to the traditional French varietals that have been grown at the Cape for centuries.

The solution? Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian grape grown on the foothills of a volcano that thrives in a hot, dry climate.

The Bosman Adama Nero d’Avola is unique. It cannot be compared directly with anything else: it represents innovation and modernity, yet of course it is a red wine in all of the traditional, historic sense. It is a wine to be savoured, a wine to challenge the status quo, yet a companiable wine that will both impress and inspire.

The wines are produced under the banner of Bosman Bakoena, a partnership formed with well-known actor and passionate African, Thapelo Mokoena. The partnership was established on shared values and a belief in the power of joining forces to be both creative and pioneering as we move forward into a sustainable, inclusive finish.
