Lammershoek LIBERO No.5 2016
Winemaking
All these cultivars are grown bush-vine style, aged 30-45 years, and planted on Lammershoek’s characteristic decomposed granite soil. The grapes were selected from the best performing vineyards. The highly concentrated berries were handpicked early in the morning into small lug boxes. Separate processing started on the following day in the form of various winemaking techniques to create a distinctive Rhône style blend. These methods included some carbonic as well as whole-bunch maceration on the Syrah, partially destemmed batches of Grenache and Carignan as well as some co-fermentation with the white varieties – Viognier and Chenin Blanc – added. After 18 months’ aging in old 500l French oak barrels and 2000l Foudres, the wine was carefully blended from the excellent building blocks from selected vineyards and the best batches identified in the cellar. The end-product is a unique and expressive red blend endorsed by big man Beckenbauer. Well-balanced and elegant, capturing the true Swartland terroir.
Tasting Notes
The 2016 Libero No.5 is a rich and intense red blend crafted from estate-grown old dry-land vineyards and matured in French oak barrels selected by late Franz Beckenbauer and the winemaker. It reveals sweetish red berry flavors accented by hints of orange rind and white pepper spice. The wine is phenolically ripe and complex, supported by a refined tannin structure that frames a delicious cassis core. The finish is smooth and lingering, reminiscent of marmalade, making it a coveted collector’s item with few bottles remaining worldwide.

Premium red wine exclusively selected from French oak barrels by late Franz Beckenbauer and our winemaker. The five-cultivar wine is estate grown from old dry-land vineyards, crafted into a Rhône style to honour the former Lammershoek shareholder and patron, German soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer – the product of collaboration between him and the winemaker represents a magical fruit harmony from Syrah, Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier.
